Potassium cyanide (KCN) is primarily a highly toxic white crystalline or granular solid that is very soluble in water, but it is often encountered and sold commercially as a liquid aqueous solution. This solution is clear and colorless and also highly toxic.
Properties of Potassium Cyanide (KCN) Liquid Solution
- Appearance: A clear, colorless aqueous solution.
- Odor: The solution typically has a faint odor of bitter almonds, though a significant portion of the population is genetically unable to detect this smell. This odor is due to the slow hydrolysis of KCN in the presence of water and carbon dioxide, which produces highly toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas.
- Toxicity: It is fatal if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. It is a potent chemical asphyxiant that interferes with the body’s ability to use oxygen at a cellular level.
- Reactivity: The solution is a strong base and reacts violently with acids of all kinds, immediately generating large, dangerous quantities of highly flammable hydrogen cyanide gas.
